Scottish Annual Business Statistics 2023

Data relating to the Production, Construction and Service Sectors in Scotland.


Key Points

SABS presents estimates of employment, turnover, purchases, approximate Gross Value Added at basic prices (aGVA) and labour costs. Data are provided for businesses that operate in Scotland. Data are classified according to the industry sector, location and ownership of the business. The latest SABS data are for the calendar year 2023, with data provided back to 2008.

  • between 2022 and 2023, aGVA for the non-financial business economy decreased by £3.9 billion (-3.1%), driven by a fall in aGVA in the oil and gas sector (down £6.7 billion)
  • between 2022 and 2023, Services aGVA fell by £0.6 billion (-0.9%); within Services, warehousing saw the largest increase in aGVA, whilst retail trade saw the largest decrease
  • between 2022 and 2023, Manufacturing aGVA decreased by £0.4 billion (-2.7%); within Manufacturing, manufacture of beverages saw the largest increase in aGVA, whilst manufacture of chemicals and chemical products saw the largest decrease   
  • between 2022 and 2023, Construction aGVA increased by £0.3 billion (+3.0%)
