Expert advice from the Air Quality Advisory Group on proposed new air quality objectives for Scotland.
Background
This advice note summarises the Scottish Air Quality Advisory Group’s initial comments and recommendations on the Scottish Government proposals on new air quality objectives for Scotland.
The Scottish Government proposes new annual and daily objectives, and exposure reduction targets, for three air pollutants of concern for their impacts on human health and the natural environment – nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅ (see annex for details). Although not under consideration initially, potential new targets for ozone will need to be considered in the longer term.
The proposals were discussed at the Group’s initial meeting held on 27 May 2025. This advice note also draws on additional written comments submitted by Group members.
The Group also noted that the first meeting focused on human health targets, but that impacts of air pollution on the natural environment would be within the wider terms of reference.
