Scotland’s Heat Network Fund: optimisation study grant funding - how to apply
This grant helps assess ways to improve existing Scottish heat networks, cutting costs and carbon emissions while benefiting customers.
Eligibility
Who can apply
You can apply if you are:
- a private, public or third sector heat network owner
- currently operate a heat network in Scotland
Who cannot apply
You cannot apply if you:
- operate a system which does not meet the Heat Networks (Scotland) Act 2021 definition of a heat network
- cannot demonstrate a need for government grant support
What funding can be used for
Funding can be used for consultant fees to complete technical and optimisation studies. All optimisation studies will be procured through the Technical Evaluation for Low Carbon Heating and District Heating Networks Framework by Zero Waste Scotland (ZWS), with grant funding paid directly to the appointed consultant.

What funding cannot be used for
Funding cannot be used for:
- any resource costs incurred prior to a signed agreement between Zero Waste Scotland and the Grantee
- any internal staffing or project management costs, including for management of consultants delivering the optimisation study
- any ongoing operation and maintenance costs
All projects must be completed by March 2027.
