Scotland’s Heat Network Fund: optimisation study grant funding - how to apply

This grant helps assess ways to improve existing Scottish heat networks, cutting costs and carbon emissions while benefiting customers.

Overview

The closing date for applications is 5pm on 7 October 2026.

Scotland's Heat Network Fund (SHNF) has a new funding strand for 2026 to 2027. It offers grants to help improve how existing heat networks in Scotland perform.

A total budget of up to £200,000 is available for the development of optimisation studies. These studies assess how efficient your heat network is and identify ways to improve it.

Who can apply

Any heat network owner in Scotland can apply. This includes public, private and third sector organisations.

What you can get funding for

You can use the funding for optimisation studies. These will help you:

  • identify current inefficiencies in your heat network
  • assess options to fix these problems, including potential clean heating options

We'll fund 100% of eligible costs, up to £25,000 per project.

Timescales

This is a one-year pilot. You must apply by 5pm on 7 October 2026 and projects must be completed by March 2027.

Priority projects

We'll prioritise applications that show clear benefits for domestic customers. This helps us make the biggest impact on our fuel poverty targets.
