Science Evidence Data and Digital Portfolio Annual Report 2024 - 2025

Science, Evidence, Data and Digital Portfolio of Marine Directorate Annual Report 2024-25

Foreword

I am very pleased to introduce this first Annual Report for the combined portfolio of Science, Evidence Data and Digital in the Marine Directorate. This marks a significant milestone in our journey towards achieving the strategic outcomes of the Marine Science and Innovation Strategy.

I believe we have made significant progress since the Strategy was first published and, while this Report cannot capture everything achieved, it hopefully illustrates the breadth and depth of valuable research and analysis completed across the portfolio remit.

Across the portfolio, colleagues have brought energy, skills and commitment to delivering on a wide range of commitments. From pioneering case studies to advancements in sustainable vessel operations through Low Earth Orbit Satellites integration and through various collaborative monitoring, surveillance and research programmes, this report showcases not only what has been achieved—but how.

There are examples of innovation and collaboration in action: where new ideas met practical needs, and where science and collaboration combine to deliver meaningful outcomes for communities, for ecosystems, and for future generations. In the context of the Blue Economy Vision, science and innovation are not optional, but essential. We know that Scotland’s future is bound to the health and sustainability of the marine and freshwater environments.

As we reflect on the past year, and look to the future, I want to thank every individual who has contributed to this effort, and all those who have collaborated with the portfolio during 2024-25. Our commitment to delivery, to learning, and to partnership has made the progress reported in this report possible.
