Proposed Northern Shelf Hake Fisheries Management Plan

The Northern Shelf hake FMP is one of 43 UK FMPs set out in the Joint Fisheries Statement (JFS). It sets out the policies and actions to continue to maintain the relevant stock at sustainable levels providing positive socio-economic benefits to the UK.


Scope

This FMP relates to Northern Shelf hake (Merluccius merluccius). Northern Shelf hake is found in the North Sea and West Coast of Scotland (ICES areas 4 and 6) along with ICES areas 7 and 8. This FMP only applies to the UK waters in the North Sea, West of Scotland and Rockall (ICES areas 4 and 6), along with ICES areas 7.a, 7.d-h, and 7.j.

The 2020 Act requires the relevant authority or authorities to prepare and publish FMPs in accordance with the list and timetable included in the JFS.[2] The relevant authorities responsible for this FMP are DAERA, Defra, the Welsh Government, and the Scottish Government.[3] The plan has been prepared and published jointly by the relevant authorities for the purposes of the 2020 Act. As the coordinating authority, the Scottish Government has coordinated the preparation and management of this plan on behalf of the other relevant authorities. [4]
