Proposed Northern Shelf Hake Fisheries Management Plan
The Northern Shelf hake FMP is one of 43 UK FMPs set out in the Joint Fisheries Statement (JFS). It sets out the policies and actions to continue to maintain the relevant stock at sustainable levels providing positive socio-economic benefits to the UK.
Why an FMP for hake?
Hake are a whitefish species of fish caught as part of both mixed whitefish and targeted fisheries within UK waters, and also outwith UK waters. Hake are a commercially important species within UK waters, and are the most important species for the longline fishing sector. Hake, in ICES areas 4, 6, and 7, is predominantly caught by the EU fishing fleet, although it still represents a considerable source of income for the UK fleet.
