Proposed North Sea and West of Scotland Saithe Fisheries Management Plan

The North Sea and West of Scotland saithe FMP is one of 43 UK FMPs set out in the Joint Fisheries Statement (JFS). It sets out the policies and actions to manage the relevant stock at sustainable levels continuing to provide positive socio-economic benefits to the UK.

Scope

This FMP relates to saithe (Pollachius virens) which consists of the saithe fishery in UK waters of the ICES areas 4 (North Sea) and 6 (Rockall and West of Scotland). The usual description used for this stock by ICES is ‘Northern Shelf’, however, we use North Sea and West of Scotland saithe for the purposes of this plan as that is the terminology used within the JFS. Saithe is also commonly called coalfish, coley, and Atlantic Pollock.

The 2020 Act requires the relevant authority or authorities to prepare and publish FMPs in accordance with the list and timetable included in the JFS.[2] The relevant authorities responsible for this FMP are DAERA, Defra and the Scottish Government.[3] The plan has been prepared and published jointly by the relevant authorities for the purposes of the 2020 Act. As the coordinating authority, the Scottish Government has coordinated the preparation and management of this plan on behalf of the other relevant authorities.[4]
