GDP Monthly Estimate: August 2025
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) statistics measure changes in the output of the economy. This is an Official Statistics in Development publication for Scotland.

In August, the largest contributor to three-month GDP growth was Professional, Scientific & Technical Services, which contributed 0.4 percentage points to the overall growth.
Other industries which made a positive contribution to three-month GDP growth include Health & Social Work, Administrative & Support Services and Accommodation & Food services which each contributed around 0.1 percentage points of growth to headline GDP.
The industry which made the largest negative contribution to three-month GDP growth was Retail, Wholesale & Motor Trades, which contributed -0.1 percentage points of growth to headline GDP.
In the three months to August 2025 compared to the three months to May 2025, output in the Production sector is estimated to have contracted by 0.3%, while Services sector output grew by 0.9%. Construction sector output grew by 0.3% in August.
As reported by the Office for National Statistics there were weakness across industries that manufacture products used by the construction industry. These included the manufacture of glass, cement, plaster and concrete
The Minerals Products Association also discussed this weakness in cement production, stating that UK cement production levels have fallen to a 75-year low.
This weakness supports the monthly fall in construction output in August 2025. Construction output grew over the three months to August 2025 but at a slower rate than over the three months to July 2025.
In the three months to August 2025 compared to the three months to May 2025, output in the Production sector is estimated to have contracted by 0.3%, while Services sector output grew by 0.9%. Construction sector output grew by 0.3% in August.
