Learning together national action plan: update

This update to the 2018 – 2021 national action plan promotes flexibility and innovation as support for local authorities when developing their strategy.

Conclusion

Learning Together is a cohesive framework that brings together a number of educational policies, strategies and plans to engage parents, carers and families with schools. The relationship between home and school is vitally important and this update celebrates the value of partnership working.

Following the Covid-19 pandemic, there is a genuine opportunity for local authorities and practitioners to review and refresh their approaches to engaging parents, carers and families, both in-person and online.

There are, of course, a number of good practice examples taking place throughout Scotland, which are cited in the links referenced in this update. As local authorities are most closely placed to work with schools, it is right that they continue to exercise their statutory duties and responsibilities. A focus on responding to local needs and demands is paramount. This is supported through the principles of the Verity House Agreement. However, it is widely recognised that developing strategies based on robust evidence and data, such as through the PIE Census can be effective.

Accordingly, through the Learning Together plan, this update provides flexibility and supports education authorities and practitioners to continue to promote the engagement and involvement of parents and carers in the learning of their children and young people.
