Our statistics

Justice Analytical Services (JAS) routinely publishes Official Statistics and management information relating to a wide range of aspects of the Scottish Criminal Justice System. This information is sourced from (i) the administrative data of Justice Partners, (ii) our own secondary analysis (i.e. new data) created from administrative data or (iii) commissioned research (for the Scottish Crime & Justice Survey (SCJS)).

It should be noted that this work programme does not seek to provide an exhaustive list of all planned statistical outputs from JAS, which are listed separately in the Justice Analytical Services statistical releases chapter.

New statistics and analysis planned for 2026-2027

Our upcoming statistics publications are pre-announced on the Scottish Government forthcoming publications list. A summary of regularly produced JAS statistics is described in Justice Analytical Services statistical releases chapter. New developments for the year ahead are outlined below.

Scottish Crime and Justice Survey: self-completion findings 2023-2025

We will publish the first results from the improved self-completion modules within the Scottish Crime and Justice Survey. These will include findings on stalking and harassment, partner abuse and sexual victimisation. This data is collected over two years and will include results from the combined 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 survey sweeps.

Scottish sentencing dashboard

We plan to publish a new dashboard based on the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service disposals data. The dashboard will provide information on how individual crimes are sentenced. It will also provide sentencing information at the individual level, based on the main crime a person has committed in each case.

Criminal Proceedings: spotlight chapter

We introduced a new spotlight chapter to the 2023-2024 publication. In this new section, an area of criminal proceedings statistics is analysed and explored in greater depth. The initial topic chosen was ‘what has driven the long-term rise in average custodial sentence length?’. A different topic will be included each year. This year’s topic is ‘what makes up the rise in Sexual crimes since the introduction of the Sexual Offences (Scotland) Act 2009?’.

Confirmed upcoming changes to our regular statistical publications

We will reduce the frequency of The Safer Communities and Justice Statistics Data Report (which is a compendium of previously published statistics) from monthly to quarterly. The impact on users should be minimal as the statistics this compendium draws upon are published no more frequently than quarterly (with many only published on an annual basis).

We will consider how best to reinstate publication of the statistics on Civil Justice in Scotland, including user consultation on the scope and coverage of future reports. This follows an earlier pause in production after release of the 2022-2023 figures, to allow our resources to prioritise wider developments in analytical infrastructure.
