6. Breakdown of Gross Expenditure by client group, Scotland, 2013-14

Expenditure by local authorities on Social Care services may be broken down by client group. The £2,908 million of Gross Expenditure on adult (aged 18+) Social Care services in Scotland in 2013-14 may be broken down as follows:

  • Older People (aged 65+): £1,743 million
    (60% of adult total, 44% of Total Social Work)
  • Adults (aged 18-64): £1,165 million
    (40% of adult total, 30% of Total Social Work).

Gross Expenditure on the younger adult (aged 18-64) client group may then be sub-divided on the basis of client need, as follows:

  • Adults (aged 18-64) with Learning Disabilities: £705 million
    (61% of adult (aged 18-64) total, 24% of adult total, 18% of Total Social Work)
  • Adults (aged 18-64) with Physical Disabilities: £228 million
    (20% of adult (aged 18-64) total, 8% of adult total, 6% of Total Social Work)
  • Adults (aged 18-64) with Mental Health Needs: £159 million
    (14% of adult (aged 18-64) total, 5% of adult (18+) total, 4% of Total Social Work)
  • Adults (aged 18-64) with Other Needs[10]: £72 million
    (6% of adult (aged 18-64) total, 2% of adult total, 2% of Total Social Work)
