Developing Official Statistics on Scotland's Peatlands
Initial development plans for new Official Statistics on Scotland's Peatlands.
6. Geographic breakdowns
In the previous section, we explained the fundamental topics of the proposed statistics. The following section explains how geographic breakdowns of these fundamental topics can provide a lot of information, for a relatively low additional cost. In performing these breakdowns it is important to note that uncertainties can increase compared to national level estimates.
6.1 Agricultural land
Breaking down figures by agricultural land will be helpful for understanding the role that agricultural land can play in peatland restoration and management. Note that here we are referring to total agicultural land – we will not be providing figures at the level of individual holdings.
6.2 Local Authorities and National Park Authorities
Breaking down figures by Local Authorities and National Park Authorities will be helpful for regional reporting.
Some figures are already published at a Local Authority and National Park Authority level, such as UK local authority and regional greenhouse gas emissions statistics - GOV.UK.
6.3 Protected areas
Breaking down figures by protected areas will give some indication of safeguarding. It will also help illustrate the contribution of peatlands to these sites, and the potential of these sites for peatland restoration. NatureScot have an interactive map of protected areas.
6.4 Public land
Breaking down figures by public land can give an indication of the potential that public bodies hold for protecting, managing and restoring Scotland’s peatlands. An interactive map Scottish Public and Crown Estate Land is available.
6.5 River catchments
Breaking down figures by river catchments may help give some indication of the potential for peatlands to influence water quality and flow regulation in these areas.
