Glossary
ADP – Average Daily Population – The approximate number of prisoners with the listed attributes likely to be in prison on an average day.
Drug Misuse - deaths with an underlying cause of drug abuse, or where the underlying cause was poisoning and there was a controlled drug present in the body.
ICD-10 – International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (10th Revision) – the international standard for systematic recording, reporting, analysis interpretation and comparison of mortality and morbidity data.
Individuals (Prison Population) – The number of unique individuals with the listed attribute spending any time in prison over the year.
MCCD – Medical Certificate of Cause of Death – A certificate that is produced by the registered medical practitioner who was attending to the deceased.
NRS – National Records of Scotland – A non-ministerial department of the Scottish Government that collects, preserves and publishes information about Scotland’s people and history.
Probable Suicide - NRS determine whether a death is a probable suicide using the MCCD and information provided by official sources such as the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service.
SIMD – Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation – A relative measure of deprivation across 6,976 small areas (called data zones).
SMR – Standardised Mortality Ratio – The ratio of expected mortality risk for a population, given age-specific mortality rates from a reference population.
SPS – Scottish Prison Service – An Executive Agency of the Scottish Government who operate and oversee Scotland’s prisons.
