What is in the Action Plan?
Suicide can affect anyone. Some people need extra support, including children and young people.
This plan has 4 goals:
Goal One. A Scotland where people are protected against suicide. This means the places we live, work and learn help to protect people.
Things we will do to reach this goal:
- Work with the government and communities to reduce suicide risk.
- Make places safer. Make it harder for people to access ways to harm themselves.
- Improve how suicide is talked about in the media and online.
Goal Two. A Scotland where people understand suicide and how to help. Everyone should feel able to talk about suicide and know where to get help.
Things we will do to reach this goal:
- Share information and reduce stigma.Stigma means negative beliefs.
- Share information and support learning for communities, workplaces and schools.
- Help people to understand more about suicide.
Goal Three. A Scotland where people affected by suicide can get help. Support should be kind, on time and easy to access. Everyone should feel more able to talk about suicide.
Things we will do to reach this goal:
- Improve support in health services and across communities.
- Support children, young people, families and people bereaved by suicide. Bereaved means someone they care about has died.
- Help people to help each other. We call it peer support.
Goal Four. A Scotland where everyone works together to prevent suicide.
Things we will do to reach this goal:
- Plan our work, using evidence and views of people affected by suicide.
- Check what is working and share learning across Scotland.
