About this document

This is an Easy Read document.

It is a consultation.

A consultation is a set of questions that the Scottish Government ask everyone to see what they think about new plans.

We want to know what you think about maybe making divorce easier for some couples:

  • who have children younger than 16 years old, and
  • who agree on how they are going to care for their children

Divorce means ending a marriage.

We also want to know what you think about maybe making divorce easier when 1 or both people have:

  • a mental illness
  • a learning disability
  • a personality disorder

Mental illness can mean things like bipolar disorder or depression.

A learning disability is to do with the way someone's brain works.

It makes it harder for someone to learn, understand or do things like:

  • making friends
  • managing money
  • doing jobs around the house

A person with a personality disorder thinks, feels, behaves or relates to others very differently from the average person.

In this document when we say ‘divorce’ we also mean dissolution.

Dissolution means ending a civil partnership.

A civil partnership means a relationship that by law gives those 2 people many of the same rights and responsibilities as if they were married.

This consultation is about finding out what everyone thinks about making divorce easier in some cases.

Please read the information in this document.

Then answer the 2 questions near the end.
