From 6 October 2026, social and private landlords in Scotland must investigate reports of damp and mould, and begin any necessary repairs within set time frames. The Scottish Government has prepared guidance to help tenants understand their rights and responsibilities. This is an Easy Read version.
Spotting damp or mould in your home
Damp and mould can be bad for your health. It can be bad for your home and your things. It can cause:
- breathing problems
- sore skin or rashes
- stress or anxiety
These can get worse the longer damp and mould is not fixed.
It is important that you tell your landlord as soon as you think you have damp or mould.
Your landlord cannot evict you for reporting problems.
You should still report other things that need to be fixed to your landlord. This will be in your tenancy agreement.
