Avian flu (bird flu): near Penicuik, Midlothian (AIV 2025/133)
Highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed on 22 December 2025.
Confirmation of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI)
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was confirmed at a premises near Penicuik, Midlothian on 22 December 2025.
A 3 km Protection Zone (PZ) and 10 km Surveillance Zone (SZ) were declared.
An end to these disease control zones was declared on 16 March 2026, following completion of cleansing, disinfection and mandatory surveillance requirements.
This means all restrictions within this area have been lifted.
