Avian flu (bird flu): near Lanark, South Lanarkshire (AIV 2025/96)

Highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed on 12 November 2025.


Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was confirmed at a premises near Lanark, South Lanarkshire on 12 November 2025. 

A 3 km Protection Zone (PZ) and 10 km Surveillance Zone (SZ) are in place.

What to do if you are in a zone and keep livestock

Controls are in place. If your premises is in one of the zones, you must ensure that the disease does not spread and that your birds are protected.

If your premises - or part of your premises - is inside the zone there are rules you must follow.

A full list of these rules is in the attached declaration. These are summarised below.

You must:

  • inspect your stock for signs of infection. Immediately report any signs of disease to your vet, your local APHA Field Services office or on 03000 600 703
  • keep records of persons visiting your premises and records of your flock, including numbers of poultry, numbers of poultry falling ill or dying, the amount of feed and water being consumed and any egg production

You must not:

  • move any of your livestock, poultry, other captive birds, eggs, domestic mammals, meat or carcases without permission (known as a licence). Where allowed, you can obtain a relevant licence by visiting our licensing page, or by emailing outbreak.licensing@apha.gov.uk
  • spread poultry litter, manure and slurry and do not move these substances from your premises without a licence
  • release game birds
