Animal Health Act 1981: expenditure and prosecutions – 2023

This statutory return is collated and laid before the Scottish Parliament in accordance with Section 80 of the Animal Health Act 1981. The report covers expenditure incurred and prosecutions taken under the Animal Health Act 1981, and incidences of disease in imported animals for the year 2023.


Compensation paid for animals slaughtered to prevent the spread of animal diseases in 2023

  • Bovine Tuberculosis - £1,430,017 (see note 1)
    • Less receipts from salvage of carcasses - £253,957
    • Total Net Compensation Paid - £1,176,060
  • Avian influenza - £5,112,677 (see note 2)

Total Net Compensation Paid for All Diseases - £6,288,737

Notes:

1. All figures have been rounded up to the nearest pound.

2. This figure includes £1,097,269 compensation paid for outbreaks that occurred in 2022, but had not been finalised prior to the report for 2022, and also £805 compensation paid for an outbreak in 2021, but not finalised till 2023.
