Age of Criminal Responsibility (Scotland) Act 2019: child interview rights practitioners application guidance
We're inviting expressions of interest from children's solicitors to support children during police and social work investigative interviews into serious harmful behaviour.
Training
If you're successful at the application assessment stage, we will provide and fund your mandatory pre-registration training.
You must complete all required training before we can formally add you to the ChIRPs register.
The training programme
The training programme has 2 parts. It includes an assessment of the required competencies.
The training covers:
- the role and responsibilities of a ChIRP
- professional standards and what we expect from you
- how to understand and represent children's views
- multi-agency working arrangements
- how to apply the 6 competencies in practice
Session 1: initial ChIRP training
This session covers:
- the core principles of the role
- the 6 competency areas
- how to apply your statutory duties in practice
Format: in person
Duration: about 6 hours, including breaks
Location: Glasgow
Date: 27 October 2026
Session 2: multi-agency practice session
This session brings together registered ChIRPs, Police Scotland and local authority social work practitioners. It focuses on multi-agency collaboration and operational practice.
Format: in person or online (we prefer in-person attendance)
Duration: about 3 hours, including breaks
Location: Glasgow, or online
Dates: 28 October 2026 in Glasgow, or online (date to be confirmed)
You must attend both sessions. Training dates are fixed and we cannot change them.
Once you're a registered ChIRP, you'll need to complete annual refresher training.
