Achievement of Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) Levels 2024-25

Achievement of Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) levels: 2024-25 provides information on national performance in literacy and numeracy, based on all pupils in publicly funded Primary 1, Primary 4, Primary 7 and Secondary 3 classes, and for all pupils based in special schools/units.


Key points

For P1, P4 and P7 pupils combined, the proportion achieving the expected levels in 2024-25 is the highest to date for literacy and the equal highest for numeracy.

Chart showing that for P1, P4 and P7 combined, percentages achieving the expected level in numeracy and literacy rose between 2016-17 and 2018-19, then fell after covid. Since 2020-21 there has been an upward trend. In 2024-25, 74.5% achieved the level in literacy, and 80.3% in numeracy. these are the highest and equal highest levels respectively.

For S3 pupils, the proportions achieving third level or better in literacy and numeracy are the highest to date.

For the individual literacy organisers, at primary level, attainment was highest in listening and talking and lowest in writing.

For S3 pupils, attainment across the individual literacy organisers at third level was more consistent.
