Curriculum reform subgroup
Overview
The Curriculum Reform Sub Group is leading an approach to articulating and embedding anti-racism across the curriculum at local and national level. The Group has been engaging with the ongoing programme of wider Education Reform to support a focus on inclusion, diversity and racial and cultural literacy into the future priorities of the education system.
The Curriculum approach covers all aspects of the life of the school and the experience of learners. In addition to considering the content and approach to curriculum areas and how to embed anti-racism it is also looking at priorities for education such as children and young people’s rights and how their views should shape the curriculum, and the wider ethos of the school and its educators, and its relations with the wider community.
Actions
- review and Reform of the Curriculum Framework from the early years onwards to articulate and embed anti-racist practice and learning.
- development and curation of high-quality resources that support and grow anti-racist learning and teaching across the curriculum (aligned with professional learning to support and enhance implementation and embedding co-design and community involvement as integral features).
- establish and fund an Anti-Racist Curriculum Senior Education Officer post in Education Scotland with a national remit that aligns with the key recommendations and principles of the Anti-Racism in Education Curriculum Reform SubGroup.
- work alongside HM Inspectorate (and Care Commission re Early years settings) to embed and grow anti-racist education expertise and leadership into the inspectorate approach that will help embed and drive awareness and improvement across the system.
- design and administer a small grants fund for young people-led activity to create and support antiracist change projects within their schools and communities.
- in recognition of the impact of national qualifications in shaping educational priorities, that SQA work with partners, including the Curriculum Reform SubGroup, to ensure appropriate inclusion of race equality and antiracist practice and content in the development of new or adapted course specifications, and relevant guidance.
Principles for an Anti-Racist Curriculum have been developed by the Group and those will be published in May 2023.
