This section provides information about the Scottish Household Survey, including frequently asked questions, information about data access, how to get results, user engagement, and what to do if you have been selected and you then agree to be interviewed as well as what happens with the information you provide.

The Scottish Household Survey is:

  • a face-to-face survey of a sample of people in private residences in Scotland
  • interviewer-administered in people’s homes
  • voluntary
  • Scotland-wide; it covers all 32 local authorities
  • three surveys in one: Transport and Travel in Scotland Survey, the Scottish House Condition Survey as well as the Scottish Household Survey
  • long-running since 1999
  • wide-ranging in topics covered, including evidence on the physical condition of Scotland’s homes
  • a provider of robust evidence on the composition, characteristics, attitudes and behaviour of private households and individuals

The SHS asks questions of a random sample of people in private residences in Scotland. Questions are asked face-to-face by an interviewer in homes all over Scotland. Participation is voluntary, and is important in helping us make representative estimates for Scotland.

For all of the Scottish Household Survey publications, please visit the SHS publications page.

The structure of the survey is a continuous cross-sectional survey, each complete sample being covered in the course of two years. As well as keeping down the annual cost of the survey and making the volume of fieldwork more manageable, a continuous survey will, in time, enable national trends to be detected sooner than would periodical surveys. Below are documents which detail the methodology and fieldwork done.
