Short-term prisoner release
Information on the change to automatic early release dates for some short-term prisoners.
Support for people leaving prison
Those leaving prison are entitled to request support called voluntary throughcare support. This can help prisoners access support to:
- find somewhere to stay
- find a job
- healthcare
- apply for benefits
People will not be kept in prison because they do not have accommodation arranged for their release.
The local council has a duty to help anyone who is homeless or at risk of homelessness, including those leaving prison. They will always try to make sure no one is sleeping outside, or rough sleeping.
People being released from prison must ask their council for support. They will carry out an assessment.
