Scottish Rural Communities Policy Review: East Borders case study

Six place-based case studies have been produced as part of Stage 3 of the Scottish Rural Communities Policy Review. This is the East Borders case study. The others are East Moray, Lochalsh and South Skye,, Harris and Scalpay, Orkney and West Lothian.

About the East Borders

The East Borders is a predominantly rural region with a relatively small and dispersed population, but one which is slowly growing overall. The area has a history of wool, knitwear, and tweed industries, although these have been in slow decline. There are increasing economic opportunities from industries including agriculture, forestry, tourism and renewable energy development. Challenges across the region include limited public transport, rural isolation, and high rates of fuel poverty.

Community Led Local Development in the East Borders

The Borders Local Action Group covers the Scottish Borders Council area. It is supported administratively by Scottish Borders Council staff, but decision-making rests with its volunteer members. Within the region, there is also a Youth Local Action Group supported both by Scottish Borders Council and the organisation Youth Borders.
