Project Title: Longstone Primary School Energy Efficiency and Renewables

Project Description:

This project involves energy efficiency upgrades and the installation of renewable technologies at Longstone Primary School in Edinburgh. It is a pathfinder project for City of Edinburgh Council which integrates the principles of deep retrofit with condition-based improvements and the outcome of this project will help inform future asset management works in the Council. The Scottish Government provided capital grant funding via Salix Finance to enable a significant reduction in the building’s carbon emissions. This will be achieved through fabric first upgrades including roof insulation, cavity wall insulation and double glazing, as well as the installation of Solar PV. The measures installed are a pre-requisite for conversion to a clean heating system in order to achieve full heat decarbonisation at the site in the future. It is predicted this project will see annual energy consumption savings of 156,896kWh.

Project Description:

The Glasgow Museum Resource Centre decarbonisation project is a fabric first and clean heating project which received capital grant funding from the Scottish Government via Salix Finance. The project implemented a package of heat loss improvement measures and replaced an existing polluting heating system with a high efficiency ASHP. The new heat pump has been enabled by electrical infrastructure upgrades throughout the building, implementation of BEMS and VSDs. The funding also supported the addition of on onsite renewable energy generation via the installation of a roof mounted Solar PV system which will assist in powering the new electrified heating solution sustainably. It is predicted this project will see annual energy consumption savings of 721,854kWh.

Project Title: Lord Home Hall Energy Efficiency and Clean Heating

Project Description:

Lord Home Hall was constructed in the late 1990's and is typical of several halls at Heriot-Watt University’s Edinburgh Campus. The Scottish Government provided capital grant funding via Salix Finance for the University to undertake an energy efficiency and heat decarbonisation retrofit project at the site. The funding has supported increased roof insulation, domestic hot water demand reduction and the implementation of smart thermostatic control of local heat emitters. Existing gas boilers have also been replaced by a new ASHP system with electric boiler back-up. This project will make a valuable contribution to campus decarbonisation while acting as a pilot for a potentially scalable approach that is consistent with campus heat decarbonisation master planning. It is predicted this project will see annual energy consumption savings of 761,419kWh.

Project Title: Auchtergaven Primary School Energy Efficiency and Clean Heating

Project Description:

Auchtergaven Primary School is a Victorian building heated by oil fired plant, with hot water provided by electric immersion hot water storage cylinders and point of use electric. The Scottish Government provided capital grant funding via Salix Finance for Perth and Kinross Council to install two ASHP at the site which will now feed the building alongside new associated heating circuits and heat emitters. The funding also supported roof insulation and draughtproofing throughout the building to reduce heat loss, as well as the installation of a new, comprehensive BEMS which allows for room by room control. It is predicted this project will see annual energy consumption savings of 385,179kWh.

Project Title: Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School Energy Efficiency and Clean Heating

Project Description:

The Scottish Government provided capital grant funding via Salix Finance for South Lanarkshire Council to deliver retrofit works to Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School in East Kilbride. The school was constructed in 2000 as a pilot for South Lanarkshire Council’s Schools Modernisation Programme and this legacy will be carried forward through this Net Zero Schools Demonstrator project which was delivered alongside East Kilbride Community Growth Area to ensure anticipated increase in demand for school placements from new housing developments are satisfied. The school has benefitted from new double glazed windows, energy efficient lighting controls, enhanced roof and cavity wall insulation, installation of a remotely managed BEMS, and new ASHPs to replace existing gas-fired boilers. It is predicted this project will see annual energy consumption savings of 656,690kWh.

Project Title: Dumfries Ice Bowl Retrofit Project

Project Description:

The Dumfries Ice Bowl is a major sports hub and currently the only ice rink in a sixty mile radius. This project involves energy efficiency and clean heating works at the site which will be upgraded by removing the existing mains gas system and replacing this with a clean heating solution. The Scottish Government is providing capital grant funding via Salix Finance for Dumfries and Galloway Council to install a WSHP incorporating heat recapture technology and upgrades to the external fabric of the building to improve insulation and air tightness. It is predicted this project will see annual energy consumption savings of 503,587kWh.

Project Description:

Built Environment – Smarter Transformation (BE-ST) is an innovation centre hosted by Edinburgh Napier University, and its Accelerator Lab in Hamilton is a unique centre of excellence which hosts a national retrofit academy, skills academy and outreach programmes. The building was previously heated with a gas-based polluting heating system, however the Scottish Government is providing capital grant funding via Salix Finance for the organisation to remove this and replace it with an ASHP as part of a retrofit to achieve the Net Zero Public Sector Building Standard and the Passivhaus Institute’s EnerPHit Standard. The funding is also supporting various fabric upgrades to the building, a sustainable innovative curtain wall system, an efficient lighting control system, MVHR and Solar PV. This retrofit will not only act as a test bed for the wider Edinburgh Napier University estate but will provide a living case study for built environment stakeholders in Scotland to visit, learn from and replicate. It is predicted this project will see annual energy consumption savings of 253,957kWh.

Project Title: St Andrews High School and Beacon Leisure Centre Energy Efficiency and Clean Heating

Project Description:

This project involves energy efficiency upgrades and clean heating works at two sites, St Andrews High School and Beacon Leisure Centre. At St Andrews High School, the Scottish Government are providing capital grant funding via Salix Finance for the organisation to increase the energy efficiency of the building by installing new curtain walling and replacing existing single glazing with new double glazed units. The funding is also supporting a combination of ASHPs and WSHPs which will be supported through renewable energy generation and serve as the primary heat source for the building. Beacon Leisure Centre is also being upgraded as part of this project and will benefit from the installation of high efficiency motors, heating zone control valves and a similar clean heating system combining ASHPs and WSHPs. It is predicted this project will see annual energy consumption savings of 2,118,196kWh.

Project Title: Cullen Primary School Energy Efficiency and Clean Heating

Project Description:

The Scottish Government is providing capital grant funding via Salix Finance for Moray Council to undertake a retrofit project at Cullen Primary School in Buckie. The project involves energy efficiency upgrades at the site, including the installation of cavity wall insulation and replacement of existing inefficient glazing with new double glazing. The existing oil boilers will also be replaced by ASHPs with new controls and heating distribution. The installation of a new Solar PV system will contribute towards generating renewable electricity to power this electrified heating solution. It is predicted this project will see annual energy consumption savings of 140,913kWh.

Project Title: Prestwick Swimming Pool Energy Efficiency

Project Description:

The Scottish Government is providing capital grant funding via Salix Finance for South Ayrshire Council to undertake an energy efficiency retrofit project at Prestwick Swimming Pool. This project will upgrade the building fabric through the installation of new roof and cavity wall insulation. The funding is also supporting the Council to install a new MVHR unit which will improve building ventilation and maximise heat recovery energy savings, as well as a new Solar PV system that will be fitted to the roof space of the building to generate renewable energy. It is predicted this project will see annual energy consumption savings of 173,483kWh.

Project Title: King’s Buildings Campus Energy Efficiency and Clean Heating

Project Description:

This project reduces heat demand in the James Clerk Maxwell, Christina Miller, Grant House and Turner House buildings on the University of Edinburgh’s King’s Buildings Campus. The Scottish Government is providing the organisation with capital grant funding via Salix Finance to undertake energy efficiency works at each of the sites and install a heat recovery heat pump which will take rejected heat from a data centre and upgrade it for use in the King’s Buildings Heat Network. This project is the first step towards decarbonisation of the heat supply on the heat network and will reduce the use of gas fired plant. It is predicted this project will see annual energy consumption savings of 3,899,577kWh.
