Increasing employment of disabled people in public sector: our response to consultation

In a Fairer Scotland for Disabled people we made a commitment to consult with public bodies, disabled peoples' organisations and disabled people themselves around whether or not we should introduce targets for the public sector to help increase employment of disabled people.

Conclusion

52. We will continue to work towards improving employment for disabled people in the public sector as part of our implementation of A Fairer Scotland for Disabled People – Employment Action Plan.

53. To achieve our ambition to employ more disabled people in the Scottish Government – and enable more disabled workers to remain in work – we will continue to work to raise awareness and change organisational culture.

54. The details will be further set out in the Scottish Government Disability Recruitment and Retention Plan which will be published during 2019, and which will continue to be evolve. The plan will ensure that the Scottish Government is being proactive and demonstrating leadership as an employer to support disabled people. This work will set the foundations for our ambitions to make Scotland a world leading nation in fair work policies.

55. To that end, we will explore how we extend our approach to the wider public sector. This will include sharing learning from the experience of developing and implementing our Disability Recruitment and Retention Plan, including developing and testing employment targets, and wider improvement work to encourage and challenge other public sector organisations to follow our example.
