Scottish Government Equality Outcomes: Pregnancy and Maternity Evidence Review

This evidence review was prepared to support the production of the Scottish Government's Equality Outcomes, with regard to pregnancy and maternity.

14 Participation in Sport

14.1 There is little evidence relating to the participation of pregnant women in regular or organised sport. There is a wider literature within medical research on the relative merits of exercise during pregnancy. The evidence generally suggests that exercise during pregnancy carries health benefits for the woman and unborn child. Only one study from Scotland was found100: it emphasised the health benefits of regular aerobic exercise for muscle tone and weight control during pregnancy.
