Rental discrimination: guidance for Scotland
How the Renters' Rights Act 2025 impacts private rented housing tenants who have children or receive benefits.
If you think you're being discriminated against
Contact Police Scotland on 101 or through their website if you think you're being discriminated against.
Keep records of any contact with landlords, including:
- timestamped copies of text messages, voicemails or emails
- copies of or links to discriminatory adverts, with dates if possible
Other support options
If you don't want to contact police first, you can speak to:
- Shelter
- Citizens Advice Scotland
- Tenants and Residents Associations or Tenants Federations
Taking legal action yourself
You can take private legal action against a landlord by contacting a law centre or solicitor.
