Proposed North Sea and West of Scotland Megrim Fisheries Management Plan

The North Sea and West Coast of Scotland megrim FMP is one of 43 UK FMPs set out in the Joint Fisheries Statement (JFS). It sets out the policies and actions to continue to maintain the relevant stock at sustainable levels providing positive socio-economic benefits to the UK.


Why an FMP for Northern Shelf megrim?

Northern Shelf megrim are a whitefish species caught as part of a mixed whitefish and targeted fishery within UK waters and also out with UK waters. Northern Shelf megrim are a commercially important species within UK waters, predominantly caught by the UK fleet, although the stock is also caught by Norwegian and EU fleets. The market for UK megrim is primarily export driven, with the key foreign markets being France and Spain. In 2022, around 2000 tonnes of megrim were landed into the UK at a value of just over £6 million.
