Cancer strategy - monitoring and evaluation: participatory systems mapping
Systems thinking methods were used to efficiently collate and structure perspectives from NHS Scotland healthcare professionals to build a system map of the current healthcare system as experienced by those affected by cancer, and how the Cancer Strategy would impact and be impacted by the system.
Conclusion
The system mapping project was successful in gathering the views of a small group of healthcare professionals on how the healthcare system and Cancer Strategy ambitions interact with the experience of patients affected by cancer. These perspectives were compiled into a system map and visualised using a custom tool such that it can be a resource that supports ongoing analysis and policy development. The final system map is the reflection of the 11 participants’ perspectives at the point in time at which they were shared, and does not explicitly include patient perspectives.
This report sets out the groundwork that will support ongoing analysis. The current output of the system mapping is intended to be a discussion tool to assist the evaluation and monitoring of the Cancer Strategy.
The examples explored in this report are necessarily snapshots of the kind of insights that can be explored with the system map and visualisation tool. The synergy identified between the “Tackling inequalities” and “Person centred care” ambitions suggests that these have high leverage to influence positive change.
