UK national North Sea cod avoidance plan

Nationally agreed plan to support recovery of the North Sea cod stock.

Active Real Time Closures (RTCs)

The Scottish Government Marine Directorate has established a Real Time Closure (RTC) due to a high abundance of cod having been detected through sampling (in line with the North Sea Cod Avoidance Plan).

Warning

The RTC will be in place for 21 days commencing at 1500UTC on 20/07/26 to 10/08/26 1500UTC.

The area, as delineated by straight lines between the following positions is closed to all gear types with the exception of pelagic gear (purse seine and trawl).

The coordinates for the RTC are as follows:

  1. 59°41.72'N, 001°26.39'W
  2. 59°41.72'N, 000°56.87'W
  3. 59°26.72'N, 000°56.87'W
  4. 59°26.72'N, 001°26.39'W

Of note is that in line with the North Sea Cod Avoidance Plan no part of an RTC can fall within the 12 nautical mile limit so within the area outlined above the closure follows the 12 mile limit between the following points:

  • 59°41.60'N, 001°02.05'W
  • 59°26.60'N, 001°14.87'W
