Items and actions

Scan for Safety Programme

The NHS Scotland Scan for Safety Programme provides traceability for implantable medical devices; improving patient safety and knowledge of device outcomes and enabling NHS Boards to fulfil GB medical device regulatory  requirements. Implementation within NHS Boards continues with national implementation currently at approximately 40% coverage. The Public Services Delivery Scotland (PSDS) led Programme ends in March 2027 and will move into a Target Operating Model (TOM) in April 2027. The PSDS Implementation Team are working at pace to ensure all NHS Boards have implemented in at least one high volume specialty and it is important that NHS Boards ensure that they remain committed to their implementation dates. It was noted that NHS Borders is the first Board in Scotland to have now fully implemented 100% traceability of implants in all specialties. NHS Boards are reminded that they are required to have local implementation plans to achieve 100% compliance.

Medical Device Incident Reporting to the national Incident Reporting and Investigation Centre

The pilot of the Once for Scotland Medical Device Incident Reporting to the national Incident Reporting and Investigation Centre (IRIC), PSDS is progressing with data now beginning to be provided to IRIC from pilot Boards. The aim of the pilot is to remove duplication of medical device safety reporting by using local safety reporting to automatically generate reports to IRIC. This will release clinical time and improve medical device safety signals in Scotland.

UK Medical Devices Safety Dashboard

The MHRA are progressing with the first public facing UK Medical Devices Safety Dashboard, expected to be available by the end of 2026. This is key step forward in improving transparency in medical device safety data for NHS Boards and patients.
