Marine and fisheries operations: future vessel concepts

Information about the concept designs for next generation compliance and research vessels. These have been developed to replace ageing assets and ensuring continued capability for Scotland's marine priorities.

Introduction

Marine and fisheries operations rely on specialist vessels that have a finite service life, typically around 25 years. While life-extension works can prolong their use, ageing assets eventually require replacement to maintain capability and meet evolving regulatory and environmental standards. To prepare for this, the Marine Directorate has developed innovative concept designs for future compliance and research vessels.

These designs showcase modern propulsion technologies, enhanced operational efficiency, and improved sustainability features, forming the foundation for the next generation of vessels that will support Scotland’s marine compliance and scientific missions.

We hope to replace our oldest vessels MRV Scotia and MPV Minna with these designs in the coming years.
