Biometric technology systems in schools: guidance

This guidance provides basic information for education authorities about biometric technology systems and considerations to take account of relating to their potential use within schools.


Introduction

1. This non-statutory guidance is intended primarily for education authorities. It provides basic information about biometric technology and its potential use within schools, highlights issues which should be carefully considered before implementing a biometric technology system and sets out the relevant legislation.

2. The relevant legislation includes the Data Protection Act 2018 and the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR). This document only provides general guidance in relation to the above legislation. Education authorities may wish to seek their own legal advice on such matters where appropriate.

3. Parents/carers may also find this guidance helpful in understanding what biometric technology is, its potential uses within schools and the relevant legislation that applies to the processing of their child’s personal data.
