Response

Request for information 1

The training provided to staff includes three key components;

Staff were provided with the Condition Insight Report developed by the Department for Work and Pensions in collaboration with key mesh survivor and advocacy groups, including Scottish Mesh Survivors. Learning undertaken focussed on the physical, psychological and functional impacts associated with mesh injuries and the experiences drawn from lived experience and the groups involved.

”In Conversation” Clinical Session led by two consultants – a surgeon and a gynaecologist. This session explored:

  • the purpose and design of mesh implants
  • the materials used
  • known causes of complications
  • the physical and psychological impacts experienced by mesh-injured women Adult Disability

Adult Disability Payment Workshops

A series of workshops were delivered to help deepen understanding of how mesh complications might affect clients applying for Adult Disability Payments (ADP). The workshops were attended by a mix of Social Security Scotland staff involved in decision making and supporting clients through the application process.

Request for Information 2

The training is not formally mandatory. However, it is strongly encouraged for staff whose roles involve supporting or assessing clients who may be affected by mesh‑related conditions.

Request for Information 3

The training is delivered by the Education and Development team within Social Security Scotland which includes registered/qualified general and mental health nurses.

Request for Information 4

All case managers receive an initial training package which is not specific to transvaginal mesh but does focus on the impact of disability. After they complete this training they undergo a period of consolidation which involves having all their case work scrutinised by a more senior member of staff and engagement with health & social care practitioners. Only when the senior member of staff is satisfied with the accuracy, understanding and quality of work does the case manager manage applications on their own. However, case work continues to be reviewed every month.

In addition to training described above case managers are expected to use a range of decision support tools which includes internal guidance and national guidance such as NHS Inform.

They also have access to our in house health & social care practitioners, who are registered nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and social workers, most of whom attended the specific training described above on transvaginal mesh. The practitioners will review an application form with the case manager. When it is considered the best option they will also directly contact the applicant to better understand the information being provided.
