Substantiated facts of employment statement made by a Member of Parliament - follow on: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Information requested

On 7th June 2025 Dave Doogan SNP MP tweeted using an eye catching infographic: "New figures show that more than 47,000 jobs and £15.5 billion of output is supported by Scotland’s renewable energy industry."

Please can you point me to the substantiated facts from a trusted source like the ONS or similar for the above statement by Mr Doogan?

As a follow on question;- what percentage of these jobs are based in Scotland and undertaken by people already living in Scotland?

Response

Please note, this response covers the follow on question listed in the query as above only. A previous response, which provided information on the economic impact of Scotland’s renewable energy sector, as published in a recent report by the Fraser of Allander Institute [The-Economic-Impact-of-Scotlands-Renewable-Energy-Sector.pdf] (FAI), responded to the first part of the request.

The answer to your follow up question is that the figures, as reported in the FAI report, represent economic impacts across Scotland’s economy as a whole.

In total, the FAI report noted that renewables supported over 47,000 FTE jobs across the Scottish economy in 2022.

It is not possible – from the data provided – to further disaggregate the employment information provided.
