Care experienced student applications to SAAS: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.


Information requested

For information in relation to the number of care experienced students that have applied to SAAS.

a) the number of applications for the HE Care Experienced Bursary.

b) the number of students studying in Scotland for university, that received this bursary.

c) the number of students studying elsewhere in the UK for university, that received the HE Care Experienced Bursary.

d) the number of applications that sought support for a tuition fee loan as well as the HE Care Experienced Bursary.

Response

Figures provided are the 2020-21 academic year and 2021-22 (to date) and are sourced from SAAS management information systems. Figures referring to applications, as well as those for the current session are sourced from live application processing systems. Figures have been rounded to the nearest 5 in line with disclosure control protocols.

Applications for the 2021-22 academic year are open until (and inclusive of) 31 March 2022, although numbers of students in receipt may still increase after this date if applications continue to be processed. Applications do not necessarily refer to students, as people applying may not ultimately undertake their intended course of study.

a) the number of applications for the HE Care Experienced Bursary.
1,670 in 2020-21
1,985 in 2021-22 (as at 31 March 2022)
These figures include all applications to the HE Care Experienced Bursary, irrespective of institution type or location.

b) the number of students studying in Scotland for university, that received this bursary.
875 in 2020-21
1,040 in 2021-22 (as at 17 March 2022)
These figures include all students in receipt of the HE Care Experienced Bursary at Scottish Higher Education Institutions only.

c) the number of students studying elsewhere in the UK for university, that received the HE Care Experienced Bursary.
35 in 2020-21
20 in 2021-22 (as at 17 March 2022)
These figures include all students in receipt of the HE Care Experienced Bursary at Higher Education Institutions in the rest of the UK (outwith Scotland) only.

d) the number of applications that sought support for a tuition fee loan as well as the HE Care Experienced Bursary.
35 in 2020-21
30 in 2021-22 (as at 31 March 2022)
These figures include all applications to both the HE Care Experienced Bursary and a tuition fee loan, irrespective of institution type. Tuition fee loans for undergraduate scheme students are only available for students undertaking study in the rest of the UK (outwith Scotland).
