Primary School inspections: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002

Information requested

1. Of the 604 primary schools that have not been inspected for 10 years or more, can this be broken down by (i) Local authority and (ii) by Council wards.
2. Which local authorities have primary schools who have not been inspected for 16 years, the longest timeframe outlined in FOI/202000035876

Response

By way of background, Education Scotland has significantly strengthened its scrutiny functions and increased the number of school inspections it carried out. In the last academic year (2018/19) Education Scotland completed 252 school inspections, an increase of over 30% on the previous year.
Schools are selected for inspection each year on a proportionate basis, using a sampling approach and predetermined set criteria rather than a cyclical approach.
In response to your request:

1. The attached spreadsheet lists the number of primary schools that have not been inspected for 10 years or more broken down by (i) local authority and (ii) by council ward.

Please note the following points in relation to the information provided:-
The list of primary schools includes local authority primary schools that are open and eligible for inspection sampling and is taken from the Scottish Government school contact details dated April 2020. (https://www.gov.scot/publications/school-contact-details/)
In determining the 604 schools, the time since last inspection is calculated based on the original inspection and does not include any subsequent further inspections.
The council ward details are based on 2019 information supplied by the National Records Scotland Geography team who determined the ward using the postcode grid reference of the school as provided in the Scottish Government school contact details.

2. One local authority, Aberdeenshire Council, has primary schools not inspected for 16 years.
