Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

FOI reference: FOI/18/03725
Date received: 17 December 2018
Date responded: 7 January 2019

Information requested

Figures of the number of students provided with support who were assessed as Estranged Students and thereby given support as independent students in each of the last five academic years split by first year and continuing students categorised by institution.

Response

I am providing some of the information you requested.  We did not have a formal means of recording whether a student was estranged until the current academic year (2018-2019), therefore, I am unable to provide you with the full time series requested.  Furthermore, I am unable to provide you with a breakdown by institution as the numbers of students at each individual institution are too small and could result in identification of individuals.

In the academic year 2018-2019, there were 85 students assessed as estranged.  Of these, 50 were entering their first year of study.  The above student numbers are rounded to the nearest five.
