Secondary school pupil numbers post-2020: FOI release

Information request and response under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

FOI reference: FOI/18/01398
Date received: 16 May 2018
Date responded: 14 June 2018

Information requested

Any analysis, modelling, policy work or other documents on planning for the expected increase of secondary school pupil numbers post 2020.

Response

I enclose a copy of the information you requested. The Scottish Government carries out Teacher Workforce Planning (TWP) to ensure that Scotland has the number of teachers it needs. Modeling of future pupil numbers is one part of this process. The attached file shows the analysis that takes account of changes in the projected secondary pupil population.

Results from this analysis are used by the Teacher Workforce Planning Advisory Group (TWPAG) alongside a range of other analysis and evidence to make recommendations to Ministers on the number of places required in Initial Teacher Education (ITE). Changes in projected pupil numbers therefore directly influence the number of places in ITE.

Papers from the December 2017 meeting of the TWPAG can be found here:
