Expenditure on School Education in Scotland, 2008-09

This document gives the figures for local authority spending on school education in the financial year 2008-09.

Table 4.1: Total gross revenue expenditure on special education (£000), 2004-05 to 2008-09 (1) (2)

NB. This table provides an indication of spending patterns on special education more broadly and not specifically in relation to special schools. Differences between local authorities will be partly dependent on whether there are special schools located within their area. Local authorities with pupils in neighbouring authorities' schools are only responsible for the payment of the additional support costs. Local authorities with special schools would record spend on pupils from neighbouring authorities, but would receive funding from those authorities. Any differences in prevalence rates will also cause differences in levels of spend. Per pupil figures calculated using population aged 5-15 inclusive in each local authority area.

(1) Includes expenditure on all aspects of special needs provision, including within the mainstream sector. Pupils in mainstream education may only have the additional element of expenditure included here, whereas pupils in special education would have the full amount included.
(2) The total gross expenditure figures are unadjusted for inter-authority and inter-account transfers. Per 5-15 year old in the population figures use adjusted gross expenditure totals.
(3) 2007-08 figures revised after updated data received from East Ayrshire.
