Adoption - vision statement: priorities and plan - summary version
Summary version of our adoption vision statement. It explains why support for everyone involved in adoption is important, and how we plan to make this better.
5. What does “lifelong support for adoption” mean?
- Adoption can offer our children a safe and loving home. It helps a child feel part of a supportive family that will look after them.
- Adoption can be hard because it means big changes for everyone.
- It is important to remember that the adoption process will involve dealing with some difficult issues
- It is okay for everyone to need support to address these challenges.
Supporting our birth families
- Birth parents might need support throughout their lives to help understand their feelings about adoption. They might also need practical support to participate in agreed contact.
Supporting adopted children and young people
- Children might feel sad or confused about moving to a new home. It can take time for them to feel safe and loved.
- Support available for adopted children should include health, education and mental health services and others. This should be available before, during and after their adoption.
Supporting adoptive parents
- Adoptive parents might need help understanding how to make their child feel comfortable and supported. They should be prepared for what that adoption process will involve.
- Adoptive parents will also need support to continue to meet the needs of their adoptive children.
Supporting adult adoptees
- When our adopted children grow up, there will still be times when they, as adults, need support as well. This might include help to understand their adoption records, or support with their health and wellbeing needs.
