Gregor Irwin
Gregor Irwin was appointed Director-General Economy in March 2023.
Prior to joining the Scottish Government, Gregor held senior roles in economic policy and international affairs. He was Chief Economist and Global Group Director at Global Counsel, where he advised multinational corporations and public institutions. Earlier in his career, Gregor served as Chief Economist and a Director at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, having also worked at the Bank of England, HM Treasury, and as an academic at the University of Oxford.
Gregor holds a doctorate in economics from Oxford University and was appointed Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in the New Year Honours List 2014.
As Director-General Economy, he leads the work to build a fair, green and growing economy. His role involves driving cross-government alignment on economic priorities and working closely with delivery partners across the public, private and third sectors to respond to the key structural and strategic challenges facing Scotland’s economy.
