The Minister for Business, Innovation and Energy Paul Wheelhouse MSP chairs the Scottish Marine Energy Industry Working Group. It held its first meeting on 29 November 2017.
The group builds on work started by the industry-led Marine Energy Group (MEG), which was established by the Scottish Government's Forum for Renewable Energy Development in Scotland (FREDS) in October 2003. MEG's task was to assess the potential for developing wave and tidal energy in Scotland, and to produce an action plan for developing that potential.
MEG produced three publications: Harnessing Scotland's Marine Energy Potential in 2004; a Marine Energy Road Map in 2009 and a Marine Energy Action Plan in 2012.
The Scottish Marine Energy Industry Working Group is currently reviewing the 2012 action plan recommendations and will agree revised industry priorities to secure the future growth of the sector in light of changes in UK Government energy policy, including the industrial strategy and EU exit.
