Temporary accommodation funding
Shows the allocation of funding targeted to the local authorities facing the most significant temporary accommodation pressures.
Local authority funding of £2m in 2024 to 2025 for temporary accommodation
Pressures in temporary accommodation are not being experienced equally across all local authorities. The increased use of temporary accommodation not only places a strain on local authority budgets but also has a detrimental impact on homeless households in terms of:
- greater housing insecurity
- longer times spent in temporary accommodation before moving into a settled home
- the additional expense incurred from living in temporary accommodation
Acquisition opportunities are also not consistent across the country due to the cost, quality, location and availability of properties in different areas.
In 2023 to 2024, we:
- invested more than £83 million in the National Acquisition Programme, which delivered almost 1,500 affordable homes
- provided an additional £2 million targeted to 15 local authorities experiencing sustained temporary accommodation pressures
Following the success of the National Acquisition Programme, we committed to investing £40 million each year in 2024-25 and 2025-26 to increase the supply of social and affordable homes through acquisitions and bring long term voids back into use.
We also allocated an additional £2 million to local authorities in 2024 to 2025 to support effective spending by increasing the capacity of local authority housing teams.
Local authority funding allocation for 2024 to 2025
While tackling homelessness and moving households out of temporary accommodation is important in all areas, the funding was targeted.
80% was allocated to the 5 local authorities identified as having the highest sustained temporary accommodation pressures. The remaining 20% was shared equally between the other 27 local authorities, providing each with a fixed amount of £15,000 (see table below).
