Roles of each of the members of the Scottish Commemorations Panel.


The Panel members all bring specific skills to the Panel. These are detailed below:

Professor Norman Drummond

  • chair of the panel
  • engagement with key stakeholders
  • strategic consideration of panel suggestions
  • production of reports to Scottish Ministers

Brigadier David Allfrey

  • events management
  • cultural links and opportunities, especially with Edinburgh Festivals
  • tourism – spotting opportunities and liaison with key organisations
  • 2014 events from the Tattoo
  • commemoration of the Army

Duke of Buccleuch

  • local authority engagement via Lord Lieutenants, Royal Company of Archers (QBGS)
  • scoping potential for commemorations involving Gretna – Quintinshill Rail Disaster 1915

Maggie Cunningham

  • broadcasting – links with media
  • presentational aspects of the programme
  • engagement with the Gaelic community – find out what's planned

Lieutenant General Sir Alistair Irwin

  • veterans issues
  • liaison with RBLS, Veterans Scotland and Poppy Scotland
  • Erskine Hospital – how to reflect within programme
  • maintain record of military and veterans events planned
  • Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) interaction

Group Captain Bob Kemp

  • RAF views – how to reflect role during wars
  • key RAF involvement to commemorate
  • consider how to reflect aerial bombing of Scotland within World War II programme

Magnus Linklater

  • media communications
  • press opportunities (in conjunction with SG Communications)
  • presentational aspects of the programme
  • advice on culture and the arts world

  • consider use of Scotland's collections and existing resources, digital mechanisms and use of Europeana

Dr Bill Maxwell

  • education – liaison with schools and teachers, and consideration of Curriculum issues
  • education programmes and legacies
  • consider how to engage young people in the programme

Trevor Royle

  • promotion of research – archives, records and geneaology
  • diaspora issues

Commodore Charles Stevenson

  • Royal Navy history and impact – especially Battle of Jutland considerations

Sir Hew Strachan

  • advice on historical accuracy and issues
