Public appointment: Members appointed to NHS National Services Scotland Board

The Cabinet Secretary for NHS Recovery, Health and Social Care, Michael Matheson MSP today announced the appointments of Paul Buchanan and Maria McGill to NHS National Services Scotland (NSS) Board.

Members

Paul Buchanan is a management consultant with a keen interest in the socio-economic make-up of Scotland. For the past 20 years he has supported public and voluntary organisations to develop stronger, healthier, and more sustainable communities with an emphasis on healthy ageing, young people, and rural development. He brings extensive board experience in sectors including tertiary education, housing, tourism, and heritage. He was recently Vice Chair of Glasgow Colleges’ Regional Board, is currently on the Management Committee of Loreburn Housing Association and has been chair of the audit committees for both bodies.

Maria McGill retired in 2020, prior to this she worked for 37 years in the NHS and the voluntary sector as a nurse, senior leader, and CEO. Maria has a particular interest in developing and leading strategic change using creative and inclusive processes. Since retiring Maria has been appointed to the Care Inspectorate board, serves as a trustee with the Marie Curie UK and is a member of the Promise Scotland Oversight Board.

Appointment

This appointment will be for 4 years and will run from 1 February 2024 to 1 January 2028.

These appointments are regulated by the Ethical Standards Commissioner.

Remuneration

These appointments are part-time and attract a remuneration of £9,030 for a time commitment of 52 days per year.

Other ministerial appointments

Paul Buchanan does not hold any other public appointments.

Maria McGill is a board member of the Care Inspectorate for which she receives remuneration of £183.33 per day, for a time commitment of 2 days per month.

Political activity

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.  However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public.   

Paul Buchanan and Maria McGill have had no political activity within the last five years.

Our aim is to help our customers save money and free up resources so they can be re-invested into essential services. We also provide consultancy and support to help public bodies join up health and social care.
