The Cabinet Secretary for Health & Care today announced the appointment of Roderick Allister Short as a Member of the Board of NHS Borders.

 

Member

Allister Short has been a director in the NHS working across hospital and community services, most recently as Director of Women and Children Services in Lothian. He has been a Chief Officer of two Integration Joint Boards, leading the transformation of health and care services. He has held professional roles in youth work and community development within the community and voluntary sectors and local authorities. He is driven by a strong commitment to prevention and reducing inequalities. Allister brings strategic planning, financial management and understanding of board governance from his experience within the public and voluntary sectors and will use these skills in his role as a board member for NHS Borders.

 

Appointment

This appointment will be for 4 years and will run from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2030.

This appointment is regulated by the Ethical Standards Commissioner.

 

Remuneration

This appointment is part-time and attracts a remuneration of £312 per dayfor a time commitment of 52 days per year.

Allister does not hold any other public appointments.

 

Political activity

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.  However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public.   

Allister has had no political activity within the last five years.

 

Background

NHS Borders is responsible for meeting the health needs and improving the health and wellbeing of around 118,900 people living in the Borders, spread over 4,723 square kilometres of town, village and rural communities.  NHS Borders provides a range of health and social care services which includes acute, mental health, primary and community services.
